Picking shoes based on foot type assessment not effective

Excerpted from FoCo Runner Blog (originally published 7/21/2010)

If you have read some of my earlier posts on the subjects of biomechanics, feet, or shoes, you know that I suggest people pick out shoes that are -LESS- stabilizing than those recommended at running shoes and most experts based on visual assessments, and even gait analyses. Recent research indicating that certain types of common running injuries increase with increasingly supportive shoes (e.g., see here) are what drives this recommendation, but it is also supported by a recent study done by the Army. read more…

First Look at Asics Gel Speedstar 4

This review first summarizes my initial observations of the Asics Gel Speedstar 4 shoes I’ve been running in, and includes my observations now that I’ve put about 150 miles on them.  Overall, they appear to live up to their billing as light weight, but I have also been impressed with their durability and cushioning (given the weight).

The shoe’s look and feel

Instep - no posting in the instep of the midsole, this is a neutral shoe for runners with efficient biomechanics

Outside of shoe - not midsole thickness in forefoot and heel

REVIEW: First Look at the Asics Gel DS Trainer 14

Item reviewed was purchased these shoes with personal funds and the author has no business or other relationship with the manufacturer.

First Impressions

Recently, when I looked at the soles of my old Montrail Vitesse running shoes, which I used mostly on road rather than trail, I had to admit that the soles were a bit more worn than I should probably be running on. So, I began shopping for new shoes.  I tried on models by a bunch of manufacturers, but found that I liked the fit of Asics shoes the best, and from there I was able to home in on a couple of models I thought would work well for me.

I’m a mild-moderate forefoot overpronator with fairly low arches (particularly on my left foot). that means that my heels come down neutral, but my forefoot rolls excessively inward so that my arch flattens out a little more than many supposed experts think it should. So I was working under the conventional wisdom of the evil shoe-industrial complex that I would need a shoe that provided some kind of stability.  I had heard good things about the Asics Gel Kayano, but when I tried on the latest versions (15 and 16) of the Kayano, I was disappointed that I could not get a secure fit around my forefoot, because my foot is relatively long and narrow. A quick check confirmed that the shoes were not produced in narrow sizes, so I was somewhat out of luck. However, I wasn’t really sure that I wanted that much shoe, anyway. read more…
